But back to the writing. I plodded on for years, introducing and deleting characters and subplots, fiddling with the order of scenes, and spending hours and hours on entire sections before deleting them. I worked at home and in the holiday house. I worked on aeroplanes and in hotels whenever I was overseas. I even went part-time from the day job to get chunks of solitary writing time during and in between working in Australia.  One of the books I bought urges writers to make at least two drafts
